APCIA urges Hurricane Insurance Reviews | 2023 |
APCIA wants people to check their hurricane insurance coverage. The American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) wants to help homeowners and renters get ready for hurricane season. They say it's important to check your insurance coverage before the peak time when hurricanes are most likely to happen.
The APCIA looked at the weather forecast from Colorado State University. They found that because ocean temperatures are very warm, there might be more hurricanes than usual.
The Vice President of Property and Environmental at APCIA, Karen Collins, said it's not good to find out after a hurricane that you don't have enough insurance to fix your property. She explained that the costs to rebuild homes and businesses have gone up because of inflation and problems with getting supplies. So, it's a good idea for property owners to review their insurance policy and update it if necessary before the peak hurricane season.
Collins said there are important things to think about when choosing insurance coverage. Talking to your insurance company or agent can help you understand your options better.
To protect homes from hurricanes, the APCIA recommends some safety measures. These include cutting away tree branches near the house, checking the roof for loose or damaged shingles and fixing them, securing loose gutters, and sealing gaps around windows and doors to stop water from coming in.
The APCIA also suggests that property owners update their homeowner's insurance policies, think about whether they need flood insurance, make a list of all the things in their home, keep copies of their insurance policies, and have their insurance company's contact information saved.
